How to Apply

Join the Dexter Fire Team

Volunteering with Dexter Rural Fire Protection District is a meaningful way to serve your community, develop life-saving skills, and become part of a close-knit team. Whether you’re interested in becoming a career firefighter or simply want to give back, our application process is designed to find individuals who are committed, trainable, and ready to work hard.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Have a valid Oregon driver’s license (or be able to obtain one)
  • Pass a background check and DMV driving history review
  • Be able to complete a physical agility test
  • Pass a district-provided medical evaluation (including respiratory fit testing)
  • Be willing and able to meet our training and participation standards

Step-by-Step Application Process

1. Application Submission

Complete the online application form or pick up a paper copy at the station.

2. Interview

Qualified applicants will be contacted for an in-person panel interview with staff.

3. Background & DMV Check

We will conduct a criminal background check and review your driving record.

4. Physical Agility Test (PAT)

Candidates must complete a basic physical agility test designed to simulate fireground tasks such as hose drags, ladder carries, and dummy drags.

5. Medical Screening

You will undergo a basic medical evaluation and respiratory protection clearance through a licensed provider.

6. Acceptance & Recruit Academy

Upon acceptance, you will be enrolled in the next Recruit Academy and begin probationary service.

Timeline

We typically hold two Recruit Academies per year — one in the spring and one in the fall. Applications are accepted year-round, and interviews are scheduled in the months leading up to each academy.
