Resident Firefighter Program
An Immersive, Career-Building Experience in Fire and EMS
The Dexter Rural Fire Protection District Resident Firefighter Program is designed for highly motivated individuals seeking professional experience in the fire service while pursuing college or trade education. This live-in program provides housing at the station in exchange for service, training participation, and shift coverage. Residents become integral members of our operational crew, working alongside seasoned firefighters, EMTs, and officers.
Program Summary
Residents support Dexter Fire’s emergency response operations by staffing apparatus, responding to fire and EMS calls, participating in daily station duties, and completing regular training. The program is ideal for individuals pursuing a career in fire or emergency medical services and offers a structured, immersive pathway to employment in the fire service.
Core Responsibilities
Resident Firefighters are expected to:
- Respond to emergency incidents, including fire, medical, and rescue calls
- Participate in daily station duties and operational readiness tasks
- Complete weekly training in firefighting, EMS, rescue, and safety
- Maintain personal and shared living spaces in a professional manner
- Assist with community events, public education, and fire prevention
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following:
- 18 years of age or older
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Oregon driver’s license and insurable driving record
- Oregon EMS license above EMR (or ability to obtain within 120 days)
- Current enrollment in a college, trade program, or fire/EMS coursework
- Ability to pass a background check and physical agility test

Commitment & Expectations
