Volunteer Firefighter / EMT

We’re always looking for dedicated individuals to join our team of volunteer firefighters and EMTs. Whether you're new to the fire service or seeking experience for a future career, volunteering with Dexter Fire is a rewarding way to serve your community.

Basic Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Oregon Driver’s License or ability to obtain one
  • No felony convictions
  • Ability to pass a background check and driving record review
  • Must pass a physical agility test and medical screening
  • Willingness to meet training and shift expectations
  • Live within a reasonable response time to the district

Application Process

  1. Submit Your Application – Complete our online application form.
  2. Interview – Participate in a panel interview with our leadership team.
  3. Background & Driving Record Check – We verify safety and eligibility.
  4. Physical Agility Test – Demonstrate your ability to perform essential tasks.
  5. Medical Screening – Includes a physical exam and respiratory clearance.
  6. Academy Placement – If selected, you’ll begin Recruit Academy.

Volunteer Expectations

Being a volunteer firefighter or EMT is a serious commitment. Here's what we expect from those who wear the patch

Time Commitment

  • Attend weekly drills and scheduled training sessions
  • Meet annual training hours and call participation minimums
  • Serve scheduled shifts, including nights and weekends if assigned

Conduct & Professionalism

  • Represent the district with integrity and respect
  • Follow chain of command and safety protocols
  • Work as a team and maintain a positive attitude

Responsibilities

  • Respond to fire, rescue, and medical calls as trained
  • Assist with equipment checks, station upkeep, and apparatus readiness
  • Participate in public education and community outreach
  • Complete required training and documentation

Training & Support

  • Recruit Academy (Spring & Fall sessions)
  • Continuous EMS and firefighting training
  • On-the-job mentorship from experienced firefighters
  • Career development support
