Volunteer FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can volunteer at Dexter Fire?
Anyone 18 or older with a valid driver’s license, clean background, and a strong desire to serve can apply. No prior fire or EMS experience is required — we provide all training.
Do I need to live in the fire district?
No. Volunteers can live in or outside of the district. However, all members must meet minimum participation requirements.
What is the difference between a Volunteer Firefighter and a Resident Firefighter?
Volunteer Firefighters respond from the station when on-shift. Resident Firefighters live at the station part-time in exchange for covering shifts, responding to calls, and participating in training. Both roles are vital to our department.
Is there a cost to join?
No. Uniforms, protective equipment, and training are provided at no cost. We also offer EMT school tuition reimbursement and certifications like Firefighter I, HazMat Awareness, and Wildland FFT2.
What kind of calls will I go on?
Dexter Fire responds to structure fires, wildland fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, water rescues, and more. You’ll be trained and cleared to respond based on your qualifications and certifications.
Do I have to be an EMT to join?
No — but it’s encouraged. We offer support and reimbursement for those pursuing their EMT certification.
What is the training commitment?
New members complete a Recruit Academy. After that, you’ll be expected to attend weekly drills and participate in additional training as needed to maintain skills and certifications.
What are the participation requirements?
All volunteers must complete a minimum of 48 hours per month through scheduled shifts, standby, or emergency call responses. Resident Firefighters follow a structured 48/96 shift rotation.
What gear do I need to buy?
Nothing. Dexter Fire provides all necessary turnout gear, uniforms, and equipment.
Can I use this experience to get hired as a career firefighter or EMT?
Yes. Many of our volunteers have successfully transitioned into full-time fire service careers. We’ll help you gain the experience, certifications, and mentorship to take that next step.
